The Jacksonville Jaguars will close out their disappointing 2018 season with a visit to NRG Stadium to take on the Houston Texans. Their 17-7 win over the Miami Dolphins last Sunday snapped a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Texans lost the No. 2 seed to the playoffs after being defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles on the road 32-30.

Return of Bortles
The Jaguars have decided to return to quarterback Blake Bortles as the starter over Cody Kessler in the season finale against the Texans. According to Jaguars coach Doug Marrone, Bortles’ mobility gives them a better chance to survive an aggressive Texans defense. There is also nothing more to lose with the season already in the dumps and the future very much in doubt.
Bortles obviously isn’t the franchise quarterback the Jaguars hoped he’d be when they drafted him ahead of standout players like Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack and Odell Beckham. Running back Leonard Fournette has been tremendous when he’s been healthy enough to play, but those moments are too few and far between. He can’t stay healthy enough to be depended on in the long-term for the Jaguars.
In last Sunday’s win over the Dolphins, the defense showed pride by putting consistent pressure on quarterback Ryan Tannehill and forcing the Dolphins into multiple turnovers. Linebacker Telvin Smith returned an interception for a touchdown.
Texans lose No. 2 seed
Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson put the team into position to knock off the Eagles on the road and keep the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, which would guarantee a first-round bye and a divisional home postseason game. However, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles soured those hopes by leading a game-winning drive that ended with a 35-yard field goal kick from Jake Elliott to ice the game.
There is still a possibility for the Texans to climb back into the No. 2 spot if they take care of business on Sunday against the Jaguars and the New England Patriots lose to the New York Jets. The Jaguars are a wounded football team, but they are still capable of delivering a knockout blow at any moment. Not to mention Bortles is also expected to be back into the lineup. He is as hot and cold as they come at the quarterback position.
Watson threw for 339 passing yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Eagles, but the defense gave up 479 passing yards and four touchdowns to Foles.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Jaguars have only won two games all season on the road, and they are heading in against a Texans team still playing for a first-round bye in the playoffs. Even if the Texans secondary has looked a bit suspect in recent outings, the Jaguars aren’t the team to take advantage of those issues considering their own struggles on the offensive side of the ball. They rank in the bottom-half of the league in passing yards and completions.
Houston has the fourth-ranked rushing defense in the NFL, which will surely cause problems for the Jaguars when attempting to pound the ball with Fournette and Carlos Hyde. That will likely set up a situation where Bortles has to win the game with his arm. It doesn’t take a soothsayer to predict the ensuing disaster that will result from that scenario.
The Jaguars defense will put up a valiant effort in the season finale, but it won’t be enough to stave off Watson, while also overcoming their own offensive shortcomings.
Prediction: Houston Texans (-9)
